In the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity threats, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has surfaced as a pivotal defence mechanism against the rising tide of cyber assaults. This systematic review delves into the nexus of AI and cybersecurity, assessing the varied applications of AI-driven methodologies, their effectiveness, and the persistent challenges within this sphere. With the advent of AI-enabled cyber weaponry, traditional security measures are proving inadequate, demanding a shift towards more innovative, AI-based solutions. This paper evaluates the trajectory of AI development in cybersecurity, from its initial recognition to the current push for continuous innovation aimed at outpacing the sophisticated, AI-powered threats. We highlight the transformative role of AI in cybersecurity, which includes the transition to autonomous decision-making systems and the emergence of offensive AI employed by cybercriminals. Despite the potential of AI to significantly strengthen cyber defences, this review identifies a critical need for ongoing research and development to navigate the complexities of AIdriven cybersecurity threats.
